Hi everyone! It’s Andres from Salsa Kings Live, and I’m so glad to have you here for Episode 174, “Now or Always.” In this episode, I dive deep into a concept that’s been on my mind for months. I share personal stories, reflections, and lessons learned from both life and the dance floor. My hope is that this discussion inspires you to be your true self in everything you do, whether dancing, building relationships, or pursuing goals. Plus, don’t forget to join us on the Miami Salsa Cruise from February 23rd to March 2nd—cabins are selling out fast!

Key Points

A Lesson on the Stairmaster

While on the Stairmaster recently, I realized that the pace my body felt most comfortable at—what I call my “identity speed”—was challenging to sustain. It felt good but required growth to maintain. This made me think about how staying true to ourselves often demands effort and growth. Whether in dance, health, or life, sometimes we have to work harder to align with our true identity.

The Importance of Being Yourself

In social dancing, being yourself is essential. When we compromise our identity to impress others or make temporary connections, it’s like lying—not just to others but to ourselves. True connections, whether on the dance floor or in life, are organic and lasting. Sacrificing who we are for short-term gains leads to hollow relationships and missed opportunities to find the people and experiences meant for us.

Delayed Gratification vs. Instant Gratification

I drew parallels to “The Marshmallow Test,” where children were given the choice of one marshmallow now or two later. Those who waited tended to have more success in life. The same principle applies to us: choosing delayed gratification—whether in health, relationships, or finances—leads to more fulfilling and meaningful outcomes. For example:

  • Health: Choosing nutritious meals over junk food leads to a longer, healthier life.
  • Relationships: Building genuine connections instead of chasing superficial ones creates lasting happiness.
  • Finances: Saving for the future brings freedom and peace later in life.

The Value of Peace Over Happiness

Happiness, as wonderful as it feels, isn’t sustainable because life is full of ups and downs. Instead, aim for peace—a state where you can remain grounded and grateful no matter the circumstances. Peace allows you to embrace life’s challenges while staying true to yourself.

Practicing Authenticity Through Dance

Social dancing is a perfect way to practice being yourself. When we dance, we interact with others, explore our preferences, and reinforce our identity. It’s an affordable and enjoyable way to connect with others while staying true to who we are. Remember, like attracts like—dancing authentically will draw the right partners and experiences to you.

Closing Thoughts

As I reflect on 174 episodes of Salsa Kings Live, I’m grateful for the lessons social dancing has taught me and the chance to share them with you. Whether it’s staying true to your identity, embracing peace over happiness, or practicing delayed gratification, these principles can transform your dance, relationships, and life.
